Content that is confidential, biased, untrue or derogatory in nature should be avoided. Forwarded messages should be avoided. Chain letters are not allowed. Replies should be directed only to the sender, not to the entire group. Internet Safeguards

All Internet users should install Antivirus software and subscribe to the product's automatic updates for the latest virus information.  This is like changing the oil in your car - pay a little now or much more later.

Never open an attachment on any email unless you are absolutely sure it is safe and your Antivirus is current.

Many email viruses now use a technique known as "spoofing" that randomly chooses email addresses from the infected computer as the "From:" address to hide the actual identity of the infected PC.  This causes users of uninfected computers to frequently receive complaints that they sent an infected message to someone else.

Emails claiming fixes for viruses are usually viruses themselves or hoaxes.  Don't pass them on.  Many warnings that are spread by email are hoaxes.  Rely only on valid information from sites like Norton, McAfee, and Snoops.

Use your Windows Update feature to be up to date on all Microsoft security fixes. Viruses thrive on security bugs that these fixes address.

If you are using High Speed connections (DSL or Cable), secure your PC with Firewall software such as ZoneAlarm, Norton or McAfee.  The longer connection times gives hackers time to find unsecured PCs and break in.  Firewalls are essential if using wireless technology.  Adding a router between the computer and modem adds additional protection.

Another concern is "spyware" that gets placed on your PC by web sites and file downloads.  Some of these programs violate your privacy and reduce your PC's performance.  Products like PestPatrol or Ad-Aware offer protection.  Check www.stopbadware.org for a list of spyware concealing programs.

Do not respond to any email or web pages that asks you for email passwords, credit card numbers or other confidential data.  This is a problem known as "phishing" where a hacker is trying to gain access to your email, identity or accounts.
